Israel's Favorite Fast Food
In the mood for a quick, hot snack? Grab half a falafel. Or if you’re really hungry, stroll around to your local falafel stand and buy a whole one. Soft, fresh pita, crammed with hot, crunchy, spicy, cumin-scented chickpea fritters, chopped cucumbers and tomatoes – all well drizzled over with tehinah …tasty, filling, and nutritious. Can it get better?
It gets better. On offer are all kinds of pickles and hot peppers; a variety of salads; thin white slices of onions, dotted with crimson sumac herb; amba, a mango-based curry sauce; and a heavy shmear of humous. I love a good drizzle of that spicy yellow amba, myself. (Recipes for the main falafel ingredients at the end of this post.)

Thanks for the mention and the link! I love your blog, found out about it shortly after you started and check back often for new posts. Keep up those wonderfully interesting and entertaining posts!

That falafel at the top looks so absolutely fresh and so delicious!!!! I wish I wouldn’t think about my weight that much and enjoy at least a hatsi mana once in awhile….
Your posts have a lot of Neshume in them!!
Thank you and have a good Shabbat.
Wow. I am drooling and hastily gulping as I type. Seriously enjoyed reading this post. Thank you so much for the virtual tour! I discovered Middle-eastern food on a trip to Dubai as a child and can’t get the taste of shawarma out of my mind. After moving to the US, I’ve had the pleasure of eating many more dishes – including the falafel. My husband and I actively seek new middle-eastern restaurants to go to and have never been disappointed with the fare.
Sabera, thank you for the lovely comment and for tweeting. Yes, sometimes the only thing that will hit the spot is shwarma. Or the falafel alternative.
I’m glad you know the riches of middle-eastern cuisine.
I recently did my own little hummus tour in Manhattan (one of the places only makes hummus…no falafel). I have picked a fave in Mahnattan and also one in Miami (I posted the latter on my blog). Your pictures make so hungry and I miss Israel a lot right now.
Zahavah, I know what you mean…food memories bring back whole life experiences, don’t they? But come back to visit soon!
